Growing up in a war-torn country with limited access to content helped inspire Tehran-born computer scientist Shahrzad Rafati to build Canadian digital entertainment company BroadbandTV. It’s now one of the largest multichannel networks, generating more than 34.8 billion monthly impressions and 204 million hours viewed per month, the company says. Rafati measures performance not just by growth, but by its impact on people, both internally and in society at large. BBTV has a 0 percent pay gap between female and male employees, and women make up 43 percent of the team and 46 percent of management. Last year, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appointed Rafati to represent Canada on the G20 Business Women Leader’s task force, a global initiative to design solutions that help ensure women’s economic empowerment.
